CS80 Service Manual and Circuit DiagramsWelcome to the CS80 Web page of KNECT, which owns 2 CS80's - one fully operational, and the other under (extensive) repair. The CS80 was the flagship polyphonic analogue synthesizer from Yamaha in and around 1976/1977.
It is generally regarded as a 'classic' synthesizer, and is considered by many of the great musicians of the last twenty years to be one of the best electronic musical instruments ever built. Examples of its use can be found in the works of Vangelis, Steve Wonder, Steve Winwood, Toto, Paul McCartney, an in Jeff Wayne's 'War of the Worlds'.
About 2000 CS80's were made, so this is a rare instrument. This is unfortunate, as it means that most of the music world will never have have an opportunity to experience this instrument first hand. Hopefully this page will shed some light on the wonder that is the CS80.
- A true performance synthesizer.
- The CS80 is a 2 * 8 Voice Polyphonic synthesizer. Each synthesizer has its own set of VCO, VCA, VCF, EG and Velocity response controls. It is possible to have two completely different sounds played to the keyboard (and sent to separate outputs).
- 5 octave fully weighed action keyboard, with polyphonic after touch, allowing say, different amounts of vibrato to be applied to different notes depending on the individual finger pressures. After touch can apply modulation (VCA, VCO and VCF), modulation speed, as well as VCF cutoff and VCA level. The keyboard is also velocity sensitive (to both VCA and VCF cutoff levels, each individually controlled for each of the two 8 voice synthesizers).
- Ring modulation is to a synthesizer what distortion is to an electric guitar. It's a specific type of effect, but with the four controls dedicated to depth, rate and EG, the CS80 modulator is unique among synthesizers.
- 0.6 meter Ribbon controller.
- Unique envelopes containing an 'Initial Level' slider as well as the ADSR envelopes, allowing for brassy and ultra sharp percussive envelopes.
- The CS80 'sawtooth' wave has a character that sets it apart from other analogue synthesizers a component to the CS80 sawtooth wave, an 'imperfection', that is frequency independent.
It would be great to see a reinvention of the CS80, with lighter and more reliable componenets, or an attempt to build a digital version, faithful to all the performance aspects of the CS80 . Maybe we'll see the CS80 II, CS800 , CS80D or CS80x in the future.
the entire system.
